The walls that came in the night

Lucky's Chronicles are fictional stories set in the world of iLuckyStones.

The second Field was bigger than the first, and Lucky rushed in, its head still full of yellow drops and numbers.

It stopped dead.

In the middle of the Field there were walls. Long, silent walls. They hadn't been there the night before, Lucky was sure of it. They had arrived in the night, the way uninvited things do.

Lucky tried to roll through one. Bonk. It tried again, harder. Bonk. The wall didn't move a millimetre.

And then it saw something it didn't like at all: a yellow drop went straight through the wall as if it weren't there.

«That's not fair,» Lucky said out loud. «It gets through and I don't?»

The wall, of course, didn't answer. Walls never answer: that's what makes them walls.

Lucky stopped (as much as a stone can stop any more than it already does) and looked. It looked for a long time. And it understood something the stones of the first Field would never understand, because they had never moved:

A wall doesn't tell you where you can't go. It tells you which way to turn.

Off it went again. This time not against the wall, but along it. It found that drops passing through came out on the other side, and that it only had to wait for them there. It found that flashing cubes gave surprises to anyone patient enough to look for them. It even found a star, resting in a corner, that put two lives back in its pocket.

But it also found that something new was moving around that Field: small, black, spiky. It moved in jolts, and when it passed the drops moved aside. Lucky decided that, for now, the best thing was to steer very, very clear of it.

When it reached five thousand, the walls hadn't disappeared. But Lucky no longer saw them as enemies. They had become the shape of the Field. The glowing words appeared again:

Look around you and you will see the answer you are looking for.

To be continued in the next episode.

Level 2: here come the walls. Lucky can't go through them, items can. Which way will you turn?
